A Super September Manoa Geeks

Yet another great turnout for another great Manoa Geeks gathering at HONBLUE. Our hosts Larry Heim and Lee Hopkins outdid themselves with food and beverages, and even designed a Manoa Geeks logo and printed up some fantastic signs. (Hey, it’s what they do!) In addition to the talkstory and networking, and a tour of the HONBLUE facility, attendees got to see demos by:

Stay tuned for news on the next Manoa Geeks (make sure you’re on the list). But I hope to see you all at Podcamp Hawaii later this month!

To have your photos included in the September Manoa Geeks slideshow above, just upload them to Flickr and tag them with “manoageeks092008.”

Honolulu Startup Weekend Coming

Sid Savara and Shawn Drost are putting out the call to web developers, programmers, designers, and entrepreneurs to imagine, plan, build, and launch an internet startup in one weekend.  Participants will come together on Friday, Sept. 19, and by sundown on Sunday will have something special and functional online. The venue is Sid’s apartment at 1296 Kapiolani Blvd. The local event is inspired by, but emphatically not affiliated with, Andrew Hyde’s “Startup Weekend” series. Check in at TechHui for more information, or to sign up to participate. [Hawaii Blog]

Bytemarks Lunch on Thursday

BytemarksLocal ubergeek Burt Lum’s monthly “Bytemarks” geek lunch has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Don Quijote (a.k.a. Holiday Mart) on Kaheka Street near Ala Moana [Map]. Bytemarks lunches are casual, local, drop-in affairs that draw anywhere from two to twenty people. Lum has been experimenting with venues since relocating out of downtown Honolulu. “Last month we meet at Don Quijote on Kaheka Street and that seemed to work out pretty well — they got tables, lots of choices for lunch and parking,” he says. “Just bring your stories and your gadgets.”

Perhaps not coincidentally, Don Quijote is across the street from Hawaii Public Radio’s studios, from which Bytemarks Cafe is broadcast live every Wednesday afternoon. For more information on the Bytemarks group, join the mailing list.
