About
Manoa Geeks is a regular gathering of people working or interested in Web 2.0, online entrepreneurship and startups, programming and development, and science and technology.
First held at a small coffee shop in Manoa Valley, the event has quickly grown to become one of Hawaii’s best forums for friendly, casual, and collaborative geekery and networking. These meetups now draw over 50 people from a wide spectrum of pursuits, bringing together everyone from engineers to artists, from educators to entrepreneurs, from geeks-in-the-making to visiting or recently relocated leaders in the global technology space.
History
Manoa Geeks (originally “geeks in manoa”) was founded by Aaron Dragushan of Wondermill Webworks. In March 2007, he sent an e-mail: “I’m thinking I’m just gonna organize a monthly coffee night for a few friends who are into the tech/2.0/startup thing. And if no-one shows up and it’s just me and my laptop, I’ll just work happily.” And lo, the first Manoa Geeks was held on March 27. Half a dozen people turned up to discuss:
- the latest buzz
- online entrepreneurship
- web 2.0
- where this tech is taking us, social implications etc.
- sites/projects/apps you’d like to see happen
And the rest is history. Within a few months, Manoa Geeks grew too large for its first home in Manoa, then too large for most other coffee shops. Today, local companies host more than 50 attendees who enjoy pizza, drinks, and techie talkstory.
